The eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) is the most widely distributed and is found in North America as far north as Ontario, Canada, and south to Key Largo. These termites live approximately 20 feet down in the ground, and can travel over 2 1/2 acres from the colony location. They will come up into the buildings, feed on the cellulose for a few days then go back into the ground to feed the queen, as well as for moisture. Termites try to stay out of sight, so it is only by accident on their part that they appear on the outside of the wall. Because termites do come from the ground and are continually traveling back to the ground, all termite treatment will be in the ground and under the slabs.
